6th-Nov-2009 12:21 am - And so it begins!
Starting NaNo. My first NaNo. In uni. And starting on the fifth instead of the first.

I wrote 700 words today and I WILL win! :D

6th-Oct-2009 04:42 pm - I am in Durham!
Too busy busy to write much more, but I am here and alive and well and having a lot of fun (and being given a lot of alcohol, uh...)

Lots of societies tried to make me join today, trying a lot of the Grey ones (cos they're free) including Ultimate Frisbee and Cheerleading of the crazy ones.

My corridor is fun, and my next door neighbor is lovely (I've yet to meet the college parents but Dad should visit tomorrow). FINALLY sent in all my modules, had to run around like crazy today and forgetting things all over the Science block. Went to Newcastle last night which was even more confusing, walked the half hour down-the-hill-and-up-again journey from train station to Grey.

Still have no internet in the room, but located the computer room which is actually fairly close by so it's alll good. It doesn't have Firefox, but I intend to fix that :P Need to copy links down into a Gmail draft, I don't remember the chatzy link...

29th-Sep-2009 01:09 am - Chibi Lexicon #1: Bad Breakups
Because clearly I am insane and need to be stopped :P

Thought this up while procrastinating, and had enough ideas to think about making this a weekly thing. *looks for someone to save her and only finds encouragement*

Disclaimers and warnings and all that jazz: The Demon's Lexicon belongs to Sarah Rees Brennan and this fanart/webcomic is simply based off her work. Spoilers a-plenty, but most comic strips will be extremely AU so you might not even notice.

(Oh, and suggestions for the future are welome! Random prompts, pairings, etc. I get inspired weirdly so anything :) )

19th-Sep-2009 08:57 pm - Talk Like a Pirate, TDL: Part 1
[The Demon's Lexicon]

Fic: Talk Like a Pirate
Summary: Prompted by [info]playwithfyr and Talk Like a Pirate Day. The main characters are heading to Mezentius House, but Alan thinks of a way to make the journey more entertaining... Alan says YAY, Nick says NAY.
A/N: Pure unbeta'd crack, written on a whim. Hope you enjoy, me mateys! Part 2 possibly coming after dinner, possibly tomorrow. We shall see, aye? This part is spoiler-free as far as I can tell.

"Ahoy!" shouted Alan, sporting a peg leg and other pirate garb. "We be sailin' the high seas to Merris by commandeerin' this 'ere vessel!"

"If English wasn't hard enough to understand..." muttered Nick. "Alan, what the hell are you talking about?"

15th-Sep-2009 04:05 pm - Gah.
So, some sites don't work on Firefox. I am used to this, it occasionally happens, I just don't use that site. Today there was one I actually wanted to access but couldn't. So I went onto IE.

...

...and now I have Google Chrome. :D

6th-Sep-2009 09:29 pm - Sarah's Big Idea (3)
Sarah Rees Brennan has posted another short story detailing the backstory of her characters from The Demon's Lexicon, to the joy of all fans!

This time, it is called The Arundel Tomb and features young Marie, Daniel and Olivia.

I have less than a month left until I go to uni O_o This creeps me out more than I can say. I have finally sorted out my student account and finance and stuff, and Durham is lovely and generous about paying up rent (I don't need to pay til November!) Definitely less worried about money. I have enough money and overdraft to get me through the first term even if nothing comes through from SLC.

Both Durham and Natwest are being slow in returning things, AND I'm still unsure about how I am getting there (Dad has a convention he needs to go to. I am happy to take the train. He is not happy for me to take the train. He thinks I will be sad and lonely and needing his advice, and it is a waste of money anyway if he drives up with the rest of my stuff the next day. Plus if Natwest don't respond quickly I won't have a 16-25 Railcard and it'll be more of a waste of money)

I have made a few friends (acquaintances, really) at Durham already. Yay for Facebook! Two people I know from school are also going, but they're not in the same college or course so I'm unlikely to actually meet up with them much.

Found out who all my MSN contacts are, phew. This is what happens when you forget to use it. One particularly boy is far too chatty but thankfully not currently in a potentially creepy way (his interests are "girls, girls, girls", oh dear oh dear, but it does not look like he's updated it in the last three years.)

Made a dress! It is pretty!

(I made up the pattern for the dress, if ayone happens to be interested, but it's based off of this character and will eventually be used for cosplay. Another in progress is this one)

There is also fanart of the adorable kind:

(Gerald from TDL, "In The Soup". Not particularly well coloured but I got lazy since I have so many characters to do - 21 potentially)

I've been mulling over the idea for a while. I get a lot of little plot ideas for TDL fic, but they are too long for a single picture and too short for a real fic. So! I shall make them into comic strips. Chibi Lexicon coming soon to an LJ near you (or possibly a forum near you, I feel it may be easier to keep track of than using LJ tabs. Maybe both, to cover all preferences. The forum is here)

Dorian Gray, a book I loved so much I named my laptop after it, is being made into a film, yay! It is a tragedy that none of my real life friends want to see it with me (the one possiblity is going to be in Glasgow by then). Why is this?! My real life friends suck. Oh fishies, and other awesome internet friends. Why are there so many miles (and occasionally oceans) between us?

After deciding on plans for Wednesday, we split up (with a group hug) and the five of us (Rav, Lal, Play, PR, me) headed off to PR's place. There was a brief delay as I searched for my ticket again (xD) and then we later realised we could have got a train straight there. Sang the Llama Song at Waterloo Station whilst waiting for the tube to arrive, much to the amusement of everyone passing by or unfamiliar (This is the Llama song). At PR's house we had lots of pizza (mmmm) and played Guitar Hero until 3.30 in the morning, which was great. I didn't play too much since I was the one who brought the game (and so had played it many times before) and PR didn't have many turns since she had a nap halfway through (after bringing five duvets up to the loft, she promptly curled up in all five).

Arranged everything so that everyone had somewhere to sleep, and set alarms for 10am only to be woken up at 9 by drilling outside. Play, PR and I went downstairs to have cereal then went back up to get cake ingredients, to find Rav and Lal in the same positions they were in when we left. Made cupcakes - well, play made cupcakes and the rest of us took turns surpervising (because really, when your nickname is Pyro we cannot leave you alone in the kitchen). Decorated them lovingly with icing and fish patterns, and played Guitar Hero a bit more (completed all of Easy mode, woo!) before leaving the house, my giant bag in tow.

On the way to the meet up, we stopped by Burger King (yum) and passed an extremely random musical chair. We met up with the others outside Foyles bookshop, where the deckchairs outside from the day before were no longer occupied. So, of course, we had the picnic there! There was TDL in the window, it was fate! There was also an outdoor book market on the same street, which we made a mental note to come back to later.

Musical Chairs, Fish Cupcakes and Bookshop Picnics )

We stayed there for about an hour whilst finding out where Evenine and Emily were, then headed off to IMAX for Harry Potter. Lal, Rav and I sang random 90s pop songs on the way there, then switched to Elephant Love Medley and Your Song. We were so busy singing that we missed a turning and lost track of the others. They weren't worried though, they heard us coming! At IMAX, we convinced random strangers to join us.

Helpful ticket lady: Sorry, none of your student IDs are valid except for Rav's.
Rav: My unofficial-looking, laminated bit of paper with my name on it counts and gets me a cheap ticket. Win!
Fishes: *thinking* Well, not counting Rav there are eight of us. How many do we need for a group ticket?
Helpful ticket lady: Ten.
Fishes: Dammit. *turn around, to see two random strangers waiting behind us* HI! What film are you seeing?
Random Strangers: Uh, Harry Potter...
Fishes: JOIN US! You get cheaper tickets!
Random Strangers: *look at our earnest, hyper faces, then look at the demon marks around all our necks* ...do we have to sit with you?
Fishes: Nope!
Random Strangers: Okay!

The movie was made extremely awesome by the 3D, although it was only for the first 12 minutes (mainly 3D bridge collapsing and swishy Dementors, plus the hottest 3D waitress in the world). We all yelled out to each other "ALCOVE OF WOE!" and "RUFFLES BANGS OF MISERY!" at appropriate moments. Left the cinema loudly discussing slashy moments - there is a scene between Snape and Dumbledore that, when taken out of context, honestly sounds like they are breaking up (Harry is the rebound).

Went to the book market, where we found many fun books, including one about Harry Potter. Van bought a dodgy bad erotica book (that, admittedly, looked very cute - it was small and in baby pink!) where the main character sounded suspiciously like PR (the strap on her left shoulder was always falling down...) and we found a book called "Quality of Mercy".

Wandered along the Thames to see the beach there, where two performers wearing kilts had built a large sand sofa and one of them was busking with a ukelele. After hearing a song about aliens we asked for a song about zombies. Sadly, he did not, but he sang a song about killing instead and switched to guitar. Quote from Lal: "We were like sidebar entertainment". This is why:

Busker: Knock knock.
Audience: ...
Fishes: Who's there?
Busker: Europe.
Fishes: Europe wh- oh.
Busker: *triumphant* No, you're a poo!

Busker: Do you want to hear a rude song?
Audience: Uhh...
Fishes: WE DO!
Busker: *sings rude song with lyrics along the lines of "Put that paper bag on your face, and I'll do you anyway"*
Fishes: *cheer wildly, give money, and prepare to leave*
Busker: Do you want to hear a ruder one?
Fishes: *abruptly stop preparing to leave* YES, YES WE DO.
Busker: *looks around in case of small children* Okay, everyone, you know who to blame, it's those girls over there.
Fishes: WE BLAME LAL!
Busker: *laughs* If you're easily offended, leave now. This song is about your mom. *sings song that is Very Rude Indeed*
Boo: *records*

Buskers in Kilts and a Sand Sofa )

I will upload the clip at some point, because explaining it is... difficult, and extremely Not Safe For Work, it's better to hear it for yourself. Anyone know how to make video files smaller? It is a ridiculous size. Maybe change the file type? Or convert it into audio?

We were quite tempted to stay but coaches and trains and whatnot were leaving and we had to get home, so we walked back to the nearest station (Rav and I sung many songs from Avenue Q during the journey). Finished with a massive group hug, and then a pendant hug, before PR (being an experienced Tube traveller) told each of us how to get to the right station.

Epilogue of sorts: Results day was Thursday. Isi, PR and I had been incredibly worried, despite the picnic being the best distraction in the world - we are all at the end of school and heading off to uni. We all got into our first choice! :D

All the pictures I took are on Photobucket are here. There will hopefully be many albums cropping up later - I know Lal was taking pictures and Van has posted some of hers up already.
